What am I doing if not responding to her in kind? I have expressed my disappointment at her words, which seems to be something you take offense to. Why is that, I wonder? Do I not have as much a right as her to express my opinion?
I don't actually hate J.K. Rowling, I am merely disappointed in her staunch positions that harm the trans community. Her abuse from men has nothing to do with trans women demanding respect. What she has experienced in her life has been awful, but it has nothing to do with how she has targeted the trans community. Using our own trauma to justify bigotry is bad form. Trauma-informed ignorance is still ignorance. Trauma can certainly explain abusive behavior, but it cannot justify it.
I understand that you disagree with my assessment that Rowling's behavior has been abusive to my community, but I firmly believe that her support of people like Maya Forstater sits firmly on the wrong side of history. Time will tell.
A tweet from Rowling that shows her disdain for trans folks:
"‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud? "
Tweets like this have been directly condescending of the trans experience and offer no middle ground for trans folks to define our own experiences. Trans men are not women, and it hurts nobody to use a phrase like "people who menstruate." The inclusion of trans men and nonbinary people amongst those who menstruate does not equate to the exclusion of cis women.
The problem is not a difference in opinion, but that Rowling is firmly refusing to listen to the trans community. Her words are antagonizing at best, even though she's peppered in vague support as you quoted earlier. She is harming the trans community by denying our lived experiences and denying us the dignity of being allowed to define our own genders, and pronouns, regardless of what's in our trousers.
Thank you for your respectful response.
