The thing that gets me most upset about this is how bigots use the suicidal ideation of queer people to justify their hateful agenda, ignoring the fact that their bigotry is the root cause of that ideation. When a queer kid is in crisis they’ll say, “see! They’re just mentally ill and need Jesus!”

And when a queer person actually completes suicide, they see them as having lost a battle with spirituality and their internal gay demons, rather than having succumbed to the end result of sustained abuse at the hands of bigots. They don’t see themselves as culpable when they’re the ones responsible for kids feeling like they have no other options.

It’s more than frustrating. Every parent who bullies their queer children to the point of suicide effectively killed their child, but they work these mental gymnastics to avoid blame and push it off on the kid who just wanted to live in a world where they’re valued for who they are.
