Expecting celebrity allies to live up to some sort of moral perfection that we ourselves don't even aspire to is a problem. A lot of the people I've seen calling out Lil Nas X are white queers who are incredibly intolerant. Their ideology is one of mandatory perfection, which isn't how humans work.

There is a major difference between a bigot and an imperfect ally, but I can't even describe Lil Nas as the latter. He's a community member. He's a bit more than an ally with us in the gender revolution -- he's very much an accomplice.

Lil Nas X isn't trans, but he is on our side in the biggest way possible. Even if I did find his joke offensive (which I very much don't) I'd be able to see it through the lens of what he does and represents to the queer community.

This joke was so innocent. It was cute, sort of funny, and didn't make anybody the butt of the joke. There was no "punching down." It literally boils down to, "Oh hey, this is maybe what I'd look like if I were a woman." Any deeper thought on it is making a soaring mountain out of a 2-dimensional social media post.

I'm so exhausted with the loudest people in our trans movement leading with the most broken pieces of their souls.
