Self-Reflection and Its Challenges

In my experience, most people can’t be honest enough with themselves to get much out of therapy. The self-reflection it takes to actually work on yourself and how you respond to the world, rather than dissociating from reality, is profound. That inability to self-reflect and communicate feelings fosters toxic, paper-thin relationships that can crumble to dust at the smallest conflicts — Or, inversely, have us forming relationships in which we find ourselves so bound to others for connection that we sacrifice ourselves to keep bad matches around in an earnest effort to avoid loneliness.

Life is hard, and most people are deeply lost in themselves, which makes forming meaningful connections rare and difficult. We often fail to see each other as full humans, only recognizing surface-level behaviors. How can we see through someone else’s facade when we’re not even able to connect with our own depths? This lack of self-awareness reverberates outward, creating a collective struggle for connection in a chaotic world.

In a world where distraction is a default setting, self-reflection can often feel like swimming against a powerful current. We’re taught to endlessly achieve, to produce without reserve, to keep the ball rolling even when we’re…
